Storytelling and Drama

ONCE UPON A TIME – Storytelling with Elizabeth Copeland
Elizabeth will work with teachers and students in the tradition of oral storytelling.  Students will adapt an original story or write one of their own. We will explore the importance of pace, setting, verbal punctuation, projection and rehearsal. Students will be encouraged to bring their own personal flare to the telling.  By the end of the program, students will deliver stories either individually or in a group.

Ideal grade level: Gr. 2 – 6
Number of sessions recommended for maximum benefit: 3 - 6

THE PLAY’S THE THING – Drama workshop with Elizabeth Copeland
Character, storyline, dialogue and conflict / resolution are the basics of dramatic form.  We can work with already written text, or write scenes of our own. We can use stories found in the social studies curriculum e.g. Pioneers, Greek Myths – or create stories drawn from the world around and within us.

Ideal grade level: Gr. 3 - 6
Number of sessions recommended for maximum benefit: 3 - 4 sessions

Music - Instrumental and Songwriting

DRUM! - Hands On Rhythm Workshop with Glenn Copeland
This workshop explores rhythms, some of which are found in western musical forms and others which are not so familiar. Glenn will demonstrate various rhythmic patterns using hand drums and electronic drums followed by discussions of their cultural origins and their migrations to other cultures. Students will themselves play various rhythmic patterns and games with Glenn's leadership and instruction using Glenn's collection of drums and any other percussion instruments available within the school.

Ideal grade level: Gr. 5 – 8
Number of sessions recommended for maximum benefit: 2 - 4

LET’S MAKE A MUSICAL with Glenn Copeland
Addressing curriculum guidelines for various artistic disciplines, Glenn will guide the students through the process of creating their own mini musical drama. Together they will create a storyline, write the script, compose a couple of songs, choreograph simple movements, find some costumes and add some visuals. Bingo! Instant musical. Just add kids’ creative initiative and mix! A hit with students and teachers alike.

Ideal grade level: Gr. 4 - 6   Suitable for one or two combined classes
Number of sessions recommended for maximum benefit: 4 - 6 sessions
