'Swing
Low Sweet Chariot' arranged and performed by Glenn Copeland
This performance workshop highlights the
black experience in North America starting with slavery and
progressing to the inauguration of Barrack Obama. The workshop
explores the irrepressible spirit of non cooperation by both
black and white Americans and Canadians. We look at the hidden
meanings of Negro Spirituals and the activities of the Underground
Railroad.
The workshop also touches upon the important
contributions of people of African descent to public life
as well as science and literature. All this is presented in a performance
workshop
format that includes drumming, songs and storytelling. Students
will be encouraged to participate in dialogue, songs, rhythm
games and improvisations in accordance with their age level
groupings.
